Water Fitness Programs

Water workouts are a great way to keep fit. Water provides the ideal environment for exercise because of its unique physical properties. The natural buoyancy of water reduces weight bearing stress, allowing greater ease of movement with less strain on bones, joints, and muscles.

Water Fitness Programs

All classes are free for members of the Fort Monroe Pool. Non-members can purchase daily passes for $3 or punch cards at $25 for 10 punches, $45 for 20 punches or $60 for 30 punches.

Classes include cardiovascular, strength and stretching exercises. Classes are geared to individual level and skill and vary in all ages. Participants are encouraged to work at their own comfort level.

Aquacise - This class is performed in chest deep water. The exercises consist of aerobic type moves as well as concentrated exercises for overall body toning. Buoyancy weights and water noodles are used to perform some exercises. This is a self paced class.

Deep Water Cardio - This deep water class is performed using floatation belts which suspend you in the water. You do not need to know how to swim to be in this class. It offers a non-impact workout for those individuals that have muscle/joint conditions, asthma, high blood pressure and pregnant women. It is a self paced class, therefore can be beneficial for cross training athletes.

Arthritis H20 - This class includes people with arthritis and other related diseases as well as sedentary adults who are general de-conditioned and cannot endure sustained activities. The program includes exercises to improve the participants overall function and performance of daily tasks, mobility, gait, independence, flexibility, balance and coordination. The endurance component is optional, but low intensity endurance such as walking is usually included to prevent chilling. The components of the basic program are warm-up, joint range of motion or flexibility and strength, cool down, and optional games and activities. This class is certified by the Arthritis Foundation and instructed by a certified Arthritis Instructor.

Poolates - Effective and challenging, Poolates™ is soothing to the mind and spirit and gentler on joints and muscles than land-based exercises. Poolates™ innovatively uses the buoyancy, resistance, and gentle movement of water to strengthen muscles, enhance flexibility and posture, sharpen coordination and balance, and relax body and soul. Poolates™ – the perfect marriage of the principles of Pilates with all the benefits of aquatic exercise.

All Water Fitness Classes may be held in shallow, transitional or deep water. The use of aqua belts and resistance equipment help increase the intensity of the workout. Make this the year you make the switch to water aerobics!

The Fort Monroe Water Fitness Program is growing and dedicated to aquatic health. All of our water fitness classes are easily adapted to each person's individual skill level from competitive athlete to an expecting mother. Ages range from teen to people well into their 80's. Classes include cardiovascular, strength, and stretching exercises. Water exercise is easy-to-learn and safe, and participating in water fitness classes is a great way to get a workout that combines a greater range of motion with lower impact on the joints. The natural buoyancy of water supports joints and creates a resistant environment to work muscles in all directions, "mother nature's weight machine". We encourage all participants to work at their own comfort level and intensity.

Non-swimmers are welcome, but you should be comfortable in the water to participate. Come join in the fun!

Adult swim lessons are available. Please check the Swim Lessons page or contact the Indoor Pool for more information.
