Partnerships in Education

Goals:
  • Enhance the education environment of youth in local schools
  • Foster stronger links between Ft. Monroe and the Hampton Roads schools
  • Directly contribute to Army's potential labor market
  • Good public relations

Policy
1997 America Goes Back to School memorandum: "Mission permitting, military personnel interested in volunteering in a Department of Defense Education Activity school or local elementary or secondary school may be excused from duty for up to one hour per week. Civilian employees may be excused without being charged leave for up to 59 minutes per week, so long as no other excused absences during the week are approved. Excused absences for these volunteer activities are limited to situations where the volunteer work and the employee's regular duty hours coincide. In all cases, arrangements must be made in advance with the educational activity, and the volunteers' supervisor must approve the time off."

Awards
Soldiers may receive a Certificate of Achievement or the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for volunteering in a school. Civilians may be recognized with a Certificate of Achievement, Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service, or other appropriate award.

MOA
Hampton City Schools and Newport News Public Schools have signed the SETS-MOA. Poquoson and York County School Division are expected to sign in the near future.
