The Peninsula has numerous private schools at every level of schooling. Many are religiously affiliated. A recommended first step is to call the school for information about grades, curriculum, tuition and schedules. There are waiting lists at many schools, particularly for first grade classes. Most schools require admissions tests. Tuitions vary widely and increase with the grade level at most institutions. Preschoolers can pay as much as $2,000 for five-day week program. High school costs can range from $3,000-$5,000 a year. In addition to basic fees, students pay for books and transportation. Not all private schools are accredited. Many private schools offer accelerated programs for gifted students. Some independent schools known for their gifted programs are Norfolk Academy, Cape Henry Collegiate, Baylake Pines Private School and the Williams School. For further information about accreditation contact the Virginia Department of Education, Monroe Bldg, 101 N. 14th St., Richmond VA 23219, (757) 225-2094. All schools are too numerous to list.
